Pakistan doesn’t have one income tax slab table – it has (at least) two that matter to individuals. Using the wrong one is among the most common filing errors we see. Here’s how they differ and how to know which applies to you.
The two tables
Salaried individuals are taxed under the salary slab table: for 2025-26, the first Rs 600,000 is exempt, then progressive rates of 1%, 11%, 23%, 30% and 35%, with a 9% surcharge above Rs 10 million. Tax is deducted at source by the employer every month.
Non-salaried individuals – freelancers, professionals, traders – fall under a separate table in the Income Tax Ordinance with its own thresholds and rates. Withholding on their payments works differently too, through contract and service-payment deductions rather than monthly salary withholding.
What if you earn both?
Very common: a salaried job plus freelance or rental income. Each stream is computed under its own rules, then combined on the return with adjustable withholding credited. This is exactly the situation where a quick calculator check plus professional filing pays for itself.
How to check which applies
- Salary from an employer with monthly tax deduction – salaried table.
- Freelance, consultancy, trading or professional receipts – non-salaried table.
- Both – both, computed separately.
