How to File Your Income Tax Return in Pakistan: A 2026 Step-by-Step Guide

Filing your income tax return sounds intimidating the first time. In practice, it’s a predictable process: gather documents, compute your liability under the correct slabs, submit through FBR’s online portal, and confirm your Active Taxpayer status. This guide walks through each step in plain language.

Step 1: Get registered (NTN)

You need a National Tax Number, which for individuals is your CNIC-based registration with FBR. If you’ve never filed, registration through the FBR portal is the starting point – our return filing service handles this for clients who prefer not to DIY.

Step 2: Collect your documents

For most salaried filers: CNIC, annual salary certificate or monthly slips, bank statements for the tax year, and withholding tax certificates – salary tax deducted by your employer, tax on bank profits, vehicle token tax, property transactions. Freelancers and businesses add invoices, expense records and contract certificates.

Step 3: Compute under the right slabs

This is where mistakes happen. Salaried and non-salaried income use different slab tables, and withholding already deducted is adjustable – not an extra cost. Run your figures through our salary tax calculator first so you know the expected number before you file.

Step 4: File and verify ATL status

Submit through FBR’s Iris portal, then check your name on the Active Taxpayer List. ATL status is the practical payoff: lower withholding on banking, mobile, vehicles and property for the whole year.

Common first-timer mistakes

  • Using the wrong slab table (salaried vs non-salaried).
  • Forgetting adjustable withholding – leaving money on the table.
  • Missing the deadline and losing ATL benefits for months.

Filing once, correctly, sets the pattern for every future year. And if you’d rather hand it off, we file returns for clients across Pakistan.
